Pricey for the qualityJan 07, 2012
By trf At a recent watch repair class, I saw a number of these benches. They were very nice and I eventually had enough discretionary funds to feel like I could buy one. Mine arrived today (very fast and free shipping) and it's OK, but not great. I either got an inferior one, or perhaps the quality has declined over time. To begin with, there are places (not many-but enough to mention) where the veneer has detached from the MDF. The knobs on the drawers were not screwed in all the way. That's OK-I screwed them in and now they are tight and good. The lock was also not screwed in all the way. I was OK with this until I screwed it in and upon doing so, the locking bar was no longer aligned properly and so the lock is useless. However, I need to leave the lock in, and the keys in the lock or I'm not able to open the drawer. It seems that the key in the lock also serves as the knob, and you need to pull on the key to open the drawer. Very bad design! Finally, the fit of the drawers in the frame is poor. Maybe the bench is poorly made and poorly assembled in general, or maybe I got one that was an exception.
The bench that I got isn't like the bench in the picture. Mine does not have the molding along the sides or bottom and the pull out shelf is raw MDF. The pull out shelf is also unusable because when you pull it out, the back end of the shelf is supported by the top of the bench. There is too much play (distance) between the two for the shelf to be reasonably level when it's out, so it's unstable and quite slanted. I don't know what they expect this shelf to be used for, but I know that some parts or tools would have a tendency to roll or slide off. The thing that bugs me the most is that I had to take this out in my shop and work on it before I could use it. Two pieces of the molding that serve as a fence/stop along the top had to be re-glued. I also took a look inside the frame, and I think the day will come when I have to reattach the drawer guides. They are just glued in.
I gave this three stars instead of two because after the work I put into it, this bench will serve my purposes. I didn't give it four stars because I don't think I should have had to put any work into it to make it useable and I question it's durability. I'm not completely happy with my purchase, but I'm not unhappy enough that I feel like taking the time or going through the hassle of returning it. This bench will work for what I need, but if I had seen it before I bought it, I may not have bought it! At $121.00, this is not an inexpensive item. Honestly, in six months or a year, I won't care about the money anymore, but when the credit card bill arrives in a few weeks, I know I'll wonder if my money was well spent.
