This is a very nice, "old style" magnifying glass for general use. The lens is glass and free of significant defects. It's a little small for reading much more than a few words at a time, but it does nicely for quick, short reads.
The glass element is the main attraction for me. My experience with the usual plastic lenses is that they're dust magnets and like to constantly fog up, requiring constant cleaning. The glass element should reduce those issues significantly, unless it has some kind of coating on it that I can't detect. I cleaned it with a normal lens cleaning micro fiber cloth and it cleaned up very nicely. The significant point was that it wasn't very dirty to begin with, so it wouldn't seem likely to be high in the dust magnet, fog producing type lens.
The lens holder is thin, chromed metal and the handle is plastic. I doubt that it would withstand much abuse, but should be fine with normal use and care.
I'd like to have a larger version to go along with this one.

Of course, magnifying glasses can be used for all sorts of tasks but I purchased this one in order to more easily see possible splinters in my 4- and 6-year-old's fingers. I already wear reading glasses, and needed something stronger. This magnifying glass has already worked well, and we've found occasion to use it a couple of other times. I keep it handy near our fisrt-aid kit.
It's not super, super powerful, but it is 5x, which is adequate. I went with this one because it received pretty decent ratings and the price was right. In retrospect, I might have sprung for a more expensive one to obtain a higher magnification.

Just returned this item. IMO there's no way this is 5x power. Box has no indication of what power it is and a $5 magnifier I picked up a local drugstore magnifies better - that one was a 2x power with a small 4x circle. I bought this to inspect for error coins and it's useless for that purpose.
